The Standard #14

Always have a plan.

The Gentlemen's Standard

football playA successful gentleman understands that he does not approach life insufficiently prepared for what might arise. He has a carefully devised strategy. He has meticulously formulated a plan for his future. The better the preparation, the better the ability to handle adversity. No crisis or dilemma will seem insurmountable. Think about it: A coach does not haphazardly send his players into a game without a game plan. Even football audibles, though deviating from an original set play, have a purpose. Sure, a play may be broken, but an intelligent player makes the necessary adjustments and adaptations. Life will not perfectly proceed as you might imagine. A gentleman will encounter setbacks. A gentleman might face innumerable obstacles. Nevertheless, a smart gentleman has a mission. He has a vision. He has a plan. He even has a contingency plan even when the original plan doesn’t go according to plan. He has strategically…

The Golden Age of Country

love modern Country

Performing at the Florida Country Superfest in Jacksonville. Luke Bryan Performing at the Florida Country Superfest in Jacksonville. June 15, 2014

There is no clearer representation of country music’s growth in popularity than in New York. For seventeen long years, there was no country music on the radio and hardly any mention of the genre in the city. However, country has been on the rise around the nation, becoming the most popular genre in the country in 2013. [1] There are a few reasons why country has become your kind of music.

“Country music is too depressing” is a frustrating statement commonly uttered out of the mouths of people who don’t like country, or most likely haven’t heard enough of it. One of the biggest factors in country’s popularity is how easy it is to relate to. Artists sing about what we love doing, not what we wish we could do. For many of us, this means working…

Style & Substance – The Floral Lapel Pin

Stay stylish gentlemen. Great motto to live by.

The Gentlemen's Standard

Flower Lapel

Lanvin – Mr Porter

So, the idea has been dancing around in my head for the past year. Floral lapel pin or no floral lapel pin? This simple, yet elegant gentleman’s accessory has existed for seemingly centuries, but contemporary utilization had relegated it’s purpose to weddings or other formal occasions that begged strict dress attire. That is, however, until Nucky Thompson expertly demonstrated the debonair art of pinning a floral accessory to one’s lapel, and then proceeded with business as usual, ignoring the ornate touch that meticulously placed it there. Absent any signals that would predict a downward trend in popularity; the floral lapel pin is literally everywhere now – casual or business. Pin or button version; arriving in an array of materials from silk to wool. And so, regretfully, I have procrastinated and not jumped on the bandwagon. The bandwagon seems full. Seriously, it appears that every gentleman is wearing one…

Kumi Kata (grip fighting) the more modern way of fighting.

Kumi Kata (grip fighting) the more modern way of fighting.

UFC 172 took place this past weekend (4.26.14) in Baltimore, Maryland. Headlining the main event of the evening was the Light Heavyweight Title Fight between Jones vs. Teixeira. Spoiler alert, Jon Jones retains the title at the 205lb class improving his record to 20-1. Jones dominated in every fight stat that was recorded, ie: total strikes, significant strikes, takedowns. Jones also dominated, in a stat that I didn’t know existed, control. Control, that is what lead me to write this article.

Kumi Kata, grip fighting. Kumi Kata is one of the most important elements of modern-day Judo and BJJ. Yet Kumi Kata is also being displayed in Mix Martial Art (MMA). In a review in the fight between Jones vs. Teixeira, the display of striking and strength is as expected for mma. What is less obvious, to the untrained spectator , is the grip fighting between fighters. Jones controlled Teixeira…

20 years of the UFC has come and gone. For sure it is a company that promotes mma that is here to stay.  Where the ancient Roman coliseum were filled to see gladiator which fought to death.  Todays gladiator need not worry about dying in the ring, but scoring fight of the night honors!

Yet before the hubbub and commercialized fights of todays mixed martial arts, which are none the less exciting to view. There was an event that is considered the first introduction to mma which took place 30 years earlier.

Jim Beck wrote an article in Rogue magazine titled ” judo bums”.  Beck claimed he could defeat any judo fighter.  At the end of the article he offered a match between a boxer and a judoka with a prize of $1000.00.  LeBell accepted the challenge. The fight was advertised as “Boxer vs. Judo-Karate” “Something new for sports fans”.

Double Down Ice Coffee

ANOTHER REASON TO LOVE SUMMER: DOUBLE DOWN ICE COFFEE.

I love coffee, but I love even ice coffee more!  I can’t wait till the weather is above 70 degrees to go get my first ice coffee of the year.  Yet what I find disturbing is those people drinking ice coffee in February, and my wife who loves coffee but dislikes ice coffee, scary, but a discussion for another day.

The other morning, I had an epiphany. “I have extra coffee, I don’t want to throw it down the drain, let’s freeze it!” Hence, Double Down Ice Coffee was created.  I believe in my subconscious I may have seen this somewhere, but I can’t remember, so I am sorry if this was posted by someone else, but to me I invented this!! lol..

check out recipe: no words necessary (I know contradicts WordPress, lol)
